Father's Day & Summer Solsitce-Monday

June 20, 2010

It is a beautiful last morning of Spring in the vineyards of Glenora and along the shores of Seneca on this the last morning of Spring 2010 with the sun rising at 5:30 AM.  Our temperature is 67 degrees and the wind is coming from the south southeast at 3miles per hour.

If you are going to celebrate (read a party) the arrival of the summer solstice tomorrow, June 21, you are going to have to get an early start as summer officially arrives at 11:28 UTC or 7:28 AM EDT. It is hard to believe that summer is here and that after tomorrow the days (daylight) will start to get shorter.

In the vineyards-It was kind of a more of the same week for the vineyard teams-applying protective sprays, suckering, mowing, some fertilizer applications, and some shop work during the rainy hours.

The production teams had the bottling lines running at both Glenora and Knapp this past week. The Glenora Team bottled our Classic Blush in both the 750 ml and 1.5 L sizes on Tuesday, and on Thursday did a custom bottling project for one of our neighbors. The Knapp Team bottled Roseabella on Thursday.

There is and was lots of "on the road" activity this past week. The week started with both Team Glenora and Team Knapp participating in the Taste the Nation event held in Ithaca. As usual both Christine and Ed traveled about the state talking with our wine shop and restaurant customers and working with our Empire North distributor representatives. Both Ed and Christine report that there are lots of opportunities for growth in the marketplace-a good thing. Barb Crosby and her Festival Teams are pulling double duty this weekend as we (they) are at two different festivals-The Strawberry Festival in Owego (Friday and Saturday) and the 1000 Islands festival in Clayton (Fri, Sat, Sun). Early reports indicate that the Strawberry Festival Team (Tom and Peggy) had one of those "when it rains, it pours" start up's on Friday including some missing wine (not put on the shipping pallet). However the Teams rallied, including a special wine deliver by Belinda and all seem to end quite well. The 1000 Team (Barb and ??) is reporting good sales, with our sales improving over last year. If anyone is interested in joining the Festival Team (you do get compensated) please send Barb an e-mail at barb@glenora.com

Team Knapp had a very busy week as well. In addition to the Taste of the Nation event they hosted the Seneca County Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours on Wednesday evening. Our hats are off to the entire Knapp Team as we received many compliments on how nice the property looked (the gardens are beautiful) and how nice the food and wines were. Again thanks to John, Anna Marie, Belinda and Rich (Doc) for making the event special for the Chamber members. On Friday evening Chef John and his team received many "get out of jail free cards" as a result of hosting a dinner for the Seneca County Magistrates Association. And last evening it was another of the monthly wine dinners at Knapp-the theme-Cruisin the Tropics with a menu that featured many recipes from "this island" which were accompanied by wines from Knapp, Glenora and Zugibe Vineyards. If you have not attended one of this dinners you are missing some great foods and great wines all presented in a very casual atmosphere-it is definitely not the "usual winemakers dinner" (stuffy). In last week's edition we asked for a "Name" for the area outside the entrance to the Inn that was being called "The Slate". We had several suggestions and the overriding suggestion and consequent choice is "The Veranda" at the Inn at Glenora. The Veranda joins The Wine Cellar Dining Room, Veraisons, Harvest Lounge and The Terrace at Glenora Wine Cellars!! Name suggestions came from Sarah, Joanne, Sherry, Laura, and I forgot-all get two bottles Glenora's finest-their choice.

The Today Show-on Thursday the Today showed featured the Inn at Glenora http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/26184891/vp/37755017#37755017  Scott is drawing up plans for new/additional rooms.

Inside Scoop-stayed tuned for the release, July 1, 2010, of a new wine packaging concept by Glenora Wine Cellars-the first of its kind in the United States!! The wine in the package-Riesling!

Thought for the Week:  Self  Accept no one's definition of your life, define yourself.
