National Flag Week--Flag Day June 14th
June 13, 2010
It is a rainy, foggy, morning in the vineyards of Glenora and along the shores of Seneca-some thunder and lightning earlier. Our temperature is a mild 66 degrees and so far today we have received .37 inches of rain. Like yesterday the weather gurus are predicting "a chance of showers" for most of the day. However the forecast for the balance of the week looks much better-sun and temperatures in the 80's.
In the vineyards-one of those the farmer is never happy with the weather weeks. This week the vineyard teams were expressing some concern with the cooler (cold) temperatures and rain that we were experiencing early in the week-last Wednesday was not a great weather day, at least for the vineyard teams as it was very cold and rainy. The concern of the vineyard team is what effect will that weather have on fruit set-pollination of the grape clusters? Time will tell, but our suspicions are that impact will be minor-other than to give the growers something to talk about.
In the cellars-both Production Teams at Glenora and Knapp had their bottling lines running this past week. The Knapp Team bottled Cobblestone Blush and Cobblestone Red and the Glenora Team bottled Classic Red and Cayuga-both in the 1.5L size. Winemaker Steve was very proud, he should be, to inform us the Glenora 2009 Riesling won a double gold medal at the recent New York State Fair competition in addition to being named "The Best White Wine at the Competition". Congratulations to Steve, the Production Team, and the vineyard teams!!
On the road-both Christine and Ed were traveling the highways and byways of New York State this past week. Both continue to work with the folks at Outback Steak houses-it appears that some of our wines will soon be "on the list" there.
Another contest-we have now added another area for meal service at the Inn-complete with a fire-pit. The area is the one located just to the right (going in) of the entrance of the Inn. Currently it is being called "The Slate" not a terribly attractive name. Some may recall a few years ago when we called what is now known as "The Terrace at the Inn at Glenora" the simple name of "the deck". So we now need to come up with an appropriate name for our new dining area-"the slate" does not cut it. So send your suggestions to gene@glenora.com and the name selected will be awarded two bottles of Glenora's finest-the winner's choice.
Every now and then the editor has been known to put in a statement or word in Gazette just to see if people are reading-last week it was "apiary" when referring to our new fowl collection at Knapp. It was not long before Vineyard Ron, he was the vineyard manager at Knapp at one time, sent the following-"Never considered myself as (or ever accused of) being a smart guy but noted you mentioned the apiary at Knapp and birds. Growing up next door to a bee farmer I knew that term had nothing to do with chickens, except for the neighbor kid (me) being chicken when helping the aforementioned bee farmer. Have you created an aviary at Knapp by chance or are you in fact raising a hive of birds...?" Ron also noted that he had recently open a bottle of 1991 Brut Rose noting that after 19 years there were still plenty of bubbles and the nose and taste of a late harvest Vignoles. The wine grape components were 73% Pinot Noir and 27% Chardonnay. Ron is looking forward 2029 when he can open this year's vintage.
Another wedding week with weddings at both Glenora and Knapp-while the chance of showers made the planning and holding the outside activities a bit tenuous everything worked out well-our wedding teams are extremely flexible.
Chef Orlando introduced his new summer breakfast, lunch, dinner, and lounge menus this past Friday. They all can be seen on the Glenora web site www.glenora.com or better yet they can be enjoyed by visiting Veraisons. It also should be noted that the menus are in place BEFORE summer!
Ticket sales for our 2010 Jazz Greats at Glenora-Mindi Abair in July and the Rippington's in August are going great and are most likely going to be sold out events.
Thought for the week: Observations of the Political Season - I have never seen an ass who talked like a human being, but I have met many human beings who talked like asses.
